ReCover: Converting Smartphones into Advanced Rehabilitation Tools

Enlarged view: Visualisation of a Smartphone App with Atachement for hand rehabilitation

Millions of people suffer from upper limb impairments after neurological or orthopedic injuries, and many continue to experience residual deficits even after undergoing in-clinic rehabilitation. ReCover is a modular sensorized device, designed as a phone cover, that converts smartphones into sensor-based tools for rehabilitation, thus enabling home-based therapy in a convenient and data-driven manner.

The modular design allows for development of multiple attachments, thus enabling the addition of various rehabilitation exercises within the same platform. The use of existing smartphone sensors, along with additional various other sensors through the ReCover attachments, enabled us to develop a suite of exergames and prototypes which we are currently evaluating with diverse patient populations.

“ If your phone is with you, so is your therapy. ”
